Preview: ask your sources, then test your recall

Preview fixed passages before AI chat, inspect exact quotes, save useful answers, or try three optional questions.

The new source-learning preview starts with a visible choice: what text may the model use? Open one source, select up to eight in Library, or enter a topic to find passages. Arivu shows the passages before it sends anything.

This work is in PR #62, not the current installer release. It replaces the main interface’s older extractive Ask workflow with provider-assisted conversations.

A session keeps a fixed set of original passages. It does not send the whole library. The preview names the provider, host, and model. You agree to send the passages before generation begins.

Self-hosted storage does not mean local AI processing. A hosted provider sees the chosen text; a compatible local provider can keep processing local. Search, reading, notes, and source preview still work without either.

Keep the quote close to the claim

Chat supports follow-ups within the same passages. Each returned claim must cite an exact quote, or the response must say the passages are insufficient. Expand a citation to read its quote and open the source.

A quote match is not proof that the claim is correct. AI can misread a source or draw the wrong conclusion. Check the evidence before reusing the answer.

Save an answer to Notes when it helps. The note remains editable and keeps quoted evidence, source links, and an AI label. Generated answers cannot feed later sessions as original evidence. You can also save a passage without AI.

Practice without a study queue

Choose Quiz me for three questions with four choices each. Submit all three choices before seeing the correct answers, explanations, and quotes. There is no streak, deadline, or required schedule.

Sessions travel in full JSON exports. Deleting a session removes its saved excerpts but leaves notes you already saved. Deleting a source blocks new generation, but does not erase earlier session excerpts. If a source changes, start a new session to inspect its current text.
